Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the courses more expensive than some other schools?
They are expensive because the size of the centre and the teaching groups is strictly limited. Also, your study program will be tailored to suit your needs and your level. You get the language training that you need, and more attention from the teacher in the classroom.
What exactly is a custom-tailored course?
Each student has different needs, so our courses are designed and adapted for your individual level. We focus on the skills that you need to practise. Some students want more speaking, some want more grammar, while others want more listening. Because the teaching groups are small, the teacher can better help you with the skills that you need.
What do you mean by personalized attention?
We will meet you at the airport on arrival and bring you to your accommodation. This service is free. The classes are held in the teacher's home, and the teachers are available to talk to you about any concerns you have - whether this is about your study, or your accommodation, or some other matter.
How many people will be in my class?
You will usually be in a group of 2 or 3. The maximum number of students in any group is 4.
What other facilities does the school offer?
Tea and coffee (Nespresso) is available for students during the day. There is a bathroom for students. There are two teaching areas which are comfortable and well-resourced. We also have a small lounge area for conversation and a ‘rainforest deck’ for relaxing with a coffee. Wifi is free, so you can bring your own notebook, tablet or smartphone.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the course.
What kind of accommodation is best?
There are different kinds of accommodation available, including luxury holiday apartments, backpackers hostels, and homestay accommodation. We usually recommend homestay because you can stay with a local family and learn more about Australia and the lifestyle. You also get more English speaking practice, and it is very economical. However, if you prefer to be more independent, we can advise and help you decide which apartment is best for you.
Do any students ever come back to the centre?
Yes, several students have either extended their study period, or returned to study again at a later date. Some students have come back three times. If you would like to contact one of our former students, we can give you their email address, so you can talk to them directly. This is a good way to find out more about the school, and about Port Douglas.
Who owns the centre?
The centre is owned and managed by David and Sveta Hurford. We are language teachers with Masters degrees (TESOL and Applied Linguistics), and many years of English language teaching experience.
Where is the centre located?
Port Douglas is about one hour north of Cairns. The centre is based in the teacher’s house which is very close to the beach (about 2 minutes). It is 10 minutes by bike to the town centre and marina. It is also near a holiday resort where students are permitted to use the beautiful pool and bar area in the afternoons.
What can I do in Port Douglas?
You can relax and swim on the beach. On Sunday morning you can go to the Port Douglas market. In Mossman Gorge you can walk in the rainforest and swim in a crystal clear river. You can go diving or snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef. At the Rainforest Habitat you can see kangaroos, koalas, crocodiles and wonderful birds. There are two golf courses in Port Douglas and many other activities in the area such as kite-surfing, fishing, and bushwalking.
