Frequently Asked Questions
Why are your courses more expensive than some other schools?
They are expensive because the size of the teaching groups is strictly limited (never more than 6 students). Also, your course will be tailored to match your needs and your level, so you get the language training that you need, and more attention from the teacher in the classroom. The language centre is small and friendly, which means you get more personalized attention. In addition, the facilities (such as the internet and library materials) are always available and easily accessible.
What exactly is a custom-tailored course?
Each student has different needs, so our courses are designed and adapted for your individual level. We focus on the skills that you need to practise. Some students want more speaking, some want more grammar, while others want more listening. Because the teaching groups are small, the teacher can help you with the skills that you need.
How many people will be in my class?
In the Intensive courses, the maximum number of students in one group is 6. In Business and Executive courses, the maximum number is even less. The average number of students is usually 3 or 4.
What do you mean by personalized attention?
We will meet you at the airport on arrival and bring you to your accommodation. This service is free. The teachers are available to talk to you about any concerns you have - whether this is about your study, or your accommodation, or some other matter.
What other facilities does the school offer?
The school has a small kitchen with a microwave. Free tea and coffee is available for students during the day. There are showers in the bathroom. Classrooms are comfortable and well-resourced. Internet and email services are free, and we have wireless facilities if you want to bring your own laptop..
Will I get a certificate?
Yes, all students receive a Certificate at the end of their course.
What kind of accommodation is best?
There are different kinds of accommodation available, including luxury holiday apartments, backpackers hostels, and homestay accommodation. We usually recommend homestay because you can stay with a local family and learn more about Australia and the lifestyle. You also get more English speaking practice, and it is very economical. However, we can advise and help you decide what is best for you.
Do any students ever come back to the centre?
Yes, several students have either extended their study period, or returned to study again at a later date. Some students have come back three times.
Can I contact other students who have studied at your centre?
Certainly. If you would like to contact one of our former students, we can give you their telephone number, or email address, so you can talk to them directly. This is a good way to find out more about the school, and about Port Douglas.
Who owns the school?
The school is owned and operated by David and Sveta Hurford. We are language teachers who have Masters degrees (TESOL and Applied Linguistics), and many years of English language teaching experience.
Where is the school located?
The school is situated in the centre of Port Douglas near the shops, and the marina. The beach is about five minutes walk from the school. There are many very good restaurants, and pleasant coffee shops nearby. Port Douglas is about one hour north of Cairns.
What can I do in Port Douglas?
