Exam Preparation Courses

Port Douglas English Language Centre provides special courses to prepare students for the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE), the Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), and the Cambridge Proficiency Examination (CPE). We also have a general intensive course with a special focus on IELTS preparation. These programs are intensive, and the centre has an excellent success rate in the examinations.

Teaching groups are small and personal (an average of 4, and a maximum of 6 students,) to ensure students receive individual attention in the lead-up to the examination.

Teaching is for 22 hours per week - face-to-face with the teacher. An additional 5 hours per week of self-study is optional.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

IELTS is the most widely accepted English qualification for entry to university and tertiary institutions in Australia, New Zealand, and Britain. It is also widely used by the Immigration Department as a test of English proficiency.

You can begin an IELTS preparation course at any time. The length of the course is 1 - 12 weeks depending on your entry level.

The exam is held in Cairns approximately twice each month. Transport is provided to and from Cairns for the purpose of sitting the examination. There is no extra charge for this service.

Cambridge Examinations

The Cambridge exams offer a globally accepted English certificate – recognised by employers and government departments around the world. The Cambridge English: Advanced is accepted by many education institutions, and is also now accepted for UK and Australian student visa applications.

10 week Cambridge courses

We offer two Cambridge preparation courses, one beginning in April (for the June exam) and one beginning in September (for the December exam). The length of each course is 10 weeks. The study program focuses on the language and skills required for the exam. All Cambridge examination preparation courses include:

• Initial testing and needs analysis
• Intensive mini-group and one-to-one tuition
• A strong focus on the grammar and vocabulary covered in the tests
• Regular progress tests and practice exams in all skills
• Progress report and certificate at the end of the study program

The courses finish immediately before the examination. Exams are held at the Cambridge Examinations Centre in Cairns. Transport is provided to and from Cairns for the purpose of sitting the examination. There is no extra charge for this service.

* There is an additional fee of $25 for students who want their certificate to be posted to an overseas address.

Special intensive Cambridge courses

In addition to the two 10-week Cambridge courses, we also offer shorter, individualised exam preparation programs which are suitable for those candidates who wish to take the examination at a different time, or a different location. These courses are very intensive and are ideally suited to students with limited time available, and who wish to register for the examination in their own country at a later date.
